Setup and Performance Estimation of an SHM System for Bolt Connection Monitoring

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is known as the steady or periodical and automated method for maintenance, monitoring and analyzing the conditions of equipment or a structure. In recent decades, studies and researches in the field of structural health monitoring have increased widely. Industrial countries dedicate yearly a huge budget to maintenance and repair equipment and important structures like bridges and refineries. Structural health monitoring can decrease the cost of repairs and maintenance by condition-based maintenance instead of planned maintenance. This approach prevents unnecessary maintenance and also unscheduled maintenance.

The purpose of this thesis is to do a monitoring on a real size model of brace to gusset plate bolted connection by Electro-Mechanical Impedance method.

This connection is one of the most common connection in steel braced frame structures. Also it is one of the most important element in structures which subject to strong lateral loads such as wind and seismic pressure. if a structure lost these connections, it cannot resist any more against lateral loads. So it is worthy to maintain these connections especially for high-value structures such as hospitals and refineries.

We study the connection in undamaged and damaged conditions. Losing one or two of bolts and also not-completely fixed bolts will be defined as damage and evaluate the data from damage conditions to get POD graphs.
